Each late autumn, black-necked cranes cross the Himalaya to winter in the glacial Phobjikha valley, circling Gangtey Monastery before they settle. It is Bhutan at its most unhurried: open marshland, a scatter of farmhouses, and long, clear light. The window runs from late November into February, so plan a few months ahead and keep the days loose enough to simply watch.
